US Election 2008 – Would Vote Swing?

A very timely movie, the recent Hollywood flick Swing Vote (2008) tries to capitalize on the ongoing race to US presidential election, with Obama and Mrs Clinton heating things up. The satirical route taken to depict political realities when a nation goes to polls is a kind of wearying as towards the end it focuses more on personal grievance handling than on larger issues.

Greeting us on-screen are Kevin Costner as Bud Johnson and Madeline Carroll as his 5th grade daughter Molly settled in the tiny, impoverished town in New Mexico. A degenerate, barely-employed, drunkard father is persuaded by an intelligent, responsible daughter to vote in the presidential election. The latter in a drunken fit fails to turn up on the D-day and the melodrama heightens thereafter. The clever and politically conscious Molly somehow manages to sneak past the dozing poll officer to cast a vote in the name of her father. However, a machine malfunction leaves the vote half stuck as polling comes to a close.

This is followed by a frenzied rush for Bud’s vote by the hot seat contenders. The camera zooms in on the wretched man’s dwelling and the world waits with bated breath. Who would get the swing vote when it is recast? A new face of political Leviathan raises its head as the hopefuls for presidential vote start jostling to grab Bud’s vote. Political lust, odious pandering, coarse commercials, and mean servility smear the face of civil existence. Good intentions, funny moments, annoying times, political follies and never-ending ambitions - ”Swing Vote” stirs up a cacophony of human realities.

Towards the end, Bud gives a long-winded, grandiloquent speech punctuated by wisdom tooth and honest yearning to bring about some real change against the canvas of US presidential run. The fate of swinging vote, however, remains dangling as the flick disappears in the flower of speech. Nice performance Kevin, after a long hiatus! Wake up all you fellas- Realize the power to make a difference wherever you are!

This time Rev. Pastor has endorsed candidacy of Senator John McCain who recently sought audience of rev. pastor and begged for his support. It may not be out of place to mention here that rev. Pastor Yang is known for his extreme views on Izlam and is tremendously popular among white Americans particularly with those having right wing leanings.
Recently Rev Pastor Yang addressed a massive gathering in New York City in support of Senator John McCain. Here is the transcript of his speech. Editor)

This is the time to decide your future and the future of your children which is in the hands of American president and depends on how he defeats war on Christians styled as “war on terrorism” and wipes out false religion Izlam from earth. The American century cannot begin unless Izlamic century ends. Muzlimz cannot be defeated unless we take crude oil of Muzlimz in our safe custody. Lest this important resource can come in the hands of Muzlim terrorist.

Let me tell you folks, why you should vote for Senator John McCain who is becoming God’s own president, for whom even Jesus would have voted. He does not owe allegiance to the voters or to the American constitution or to the American people but to the God and Jesus. He shall be responsible alone to them. He is God’s chosen and saved one. Those who vote for him will be saved.

Folks! war on terrorism is a spiritual war, a moral war, a value conflict which could be resolved only violently. This spiritual war should included war on gay marriages, porn and abortion. Never mind if this spiritual offensive requires holy torture of anti Christ terrorists. Senator John McCain understands this well. In retaliation to secular (Satanic) courts in California deciding that homosexuals should have the same rights as the rest of us, Department of Faith under McCain administration will take corrective action and propose emergency amendments to the Constitution. First thing his administration will do is to abolish abortion which is an act of terrorism and a crime against humanity. If you kill an unborn American, God will let Osama bin laden kill you.

Folks you should know that secularists, atheists, Marxists, communists and Muzlimz are fighting a worldwide secular Jihad against Christians in the name of religious freedom. There is probably a higher level of Christians being prosecuted during the last ten years than through out human history. The secularism and multi-culturalism have crippled America for decades. Therefore the war on terrorism should include war against secular Christians, so-called liberal Christians—most of them belong to Democratic Party—and against Muzlimz of all hues and sects. The holy coercion and holy torture might be justified in this case as without this it is impossible to manufacture evidence against anti Christ elements living in America.

Folks do not give credibility to the secular media’s polls which show Obama leading presidential race. Let me assure you that Senator John McCain will win. We expect Osama Bin Laden to strike America during elections that could lead McCain to victory or at least Osama might send a video caste to aljazerra supporting John McCain. Obama has committed a blunder by promising to send troops to Afghanistan to hunt Osma Bin Laden who will defiantly do something in our favour. But we pray to God for the safety of our troops in Iraq, if anything bad happens in Iraq, Obama can take undue advantage of that.

Folks you are worried about global warming, price rise, Katrina, Sept 11, our troops being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and acts of terrorism against America. You should thank God for all this as these are the signs of God. These are political statements of God. We, Christians, know more about the fate of this planet than any hell-bound scientist. The faster Earth heats up, the more quickly Jesus will return! Senator McCain understands this. He listens to what God speaks. God wants us to tell: Christianize America and whole world, good Christians! and be saved from Osma Bin Laden and global warming. Rest leave everything else to God and church.

History tells us that Hitler was God sent; he forced Jews to return to their promised land and helped European Christian to get rid of exclusivist non-white Jews from their land. So is Osam bin laden, God sent for Americans. He is our eye opener. He has changed mind set of Americans for ever. He has authored Patriotic act, introduced wiretapping of American citizens, got us justify torture of suspects and got us increase our security at home. We must thank him for that. Osama helped Americans to be close to God who tells us to wipe out Muzlimz from the face of earth before Iran develops nuclear weapons. Osama lead Churches to develop post-Sept. 11 Christianity. We msut understand that God alone can save us from Osma bin Laden, therefore be close to God. Do not do anything that goes against God’s will. Only protection we could have from terrorists attack is God’s protection. He alone can save us from Osma Bin Laden. Obama does not understand this. He is having pre-Sept 11 mind set.

McCain administration will convert America into a God centered nation whose government promotes prayer, worship and the teaching of the Christian values. It will unite Christians of all countries particularly Western countries, particularly whites and transform U.N.O into U.N.O.C (United Christian Nations Organization).

Folks we cannot Christianize America unless we privatizes democracy. Unless the meetings and deliberations regarding public policy will be held beyond the domain of democracy by the representative of leading front organization of God. Unless everything—sex, taxes, war and price of oil—will be decided upon not according to the principles of democracy and will of the people and dictates the market but according to the scriptures.

Unless we revamp whole educational system and do some curriculum changes instead of sex education and atheism, we should introduce martial arts and spiritualism. McCain administration will establishment Jesus in your educational system. McCain administration will appoints pastor Shirley of Westboro Baptist Church as secretary of Department of Faith for her excellent work in reminding Americans that they should obey God, not the American constitution and its atheistic laws.

McCain administration will continue war on Izlam until Muzlim and Iraqis, Palestine and Afghans stop resisting peace keeping forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, and unless Palestine love Israeli like their leader Mr. Abas loves Israeli Prime Minister olmert. And keep their land and resources at Israeli disposal.

Folks we must understand that Israel is a living wound in the heart of Izlam. McCain administration will do everything to defend Israel. It is necessary if we want second coming of Jesus without further delay. If we want to establish kingdom of American God all over the world. The bible commands us to pray for peace of Jerusalem (psalm 122:6), to speak out for Zion’s sake (Isaiah 62:1), and to be watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem recently erected by Israeli between Gaza and rest of the Israel. (Isaiah 62:6) and to bless the Jewish people inside and outside of America (Isaiah 12:3). These and so many other verses of the bible that have one overriding message—as christens we have a biblical obligation to defend Israel and Jews in their time of need as it is Israel that helps us keep supply of crude oil from Middle of the East . But these verses are a binding until Jesus personally descends over Washington and Arab exhaust their oil resources, after that the bible burning Jews will thrown to dogs or may be burnt alive “once again”. Who cares.

McCain’s Iraq war strategy is very simple. If Sunni Iraqis have to live in peace, they need U.S protection from Shia’s and Kurds. If Shia Iraqis have to rule Iraq, they need U.S air support and F16 bombers to eliminate Sunni insurgents. If U.S troops leave Iraq, Sunnis and Shaias will cut each others throat. This will put lives of U.S Iraqi friends(having American citizenship) in danger. And they will once again take shelter in U.S. The Iraqi crude oil will come in the hands of Alqaida terrorists.

Let me tell you McCain will not take sides in this civil war. American troops will kill all whether Shia’s, Sunni’s or Kurds who so ever resists U.S peace keeping troops. McCain administration has to protect lives and interests of Iraqi friends who risked their lives and worked with U.S, day and night to destroy Saddam’s Iraq while living in US as refugees. America must not betray them, they alone can save Iraq from wrath of American troops. Obama does not understand this.

Folks let me tell you that throughout history, we, Christians have usually been on the wrong side of government. The Roman Empire tortured Jesus Christ to death, then criminalized his friends. Later regimes continued that tradition. They routinely hunted down, imprisoned, tortured, and slaughtered people who clung to their Lord instead of the law. Something like 70 million Christians has died for their faith since AD 33. But never mind, vote for Senator John McCain. Do not miss this chance of being on the right side.

It is regrettable that Christians suffered the same tortures and death at the hands of “Christian” rulers as they had from anti-Christ, for acknowledging the pope, refusing to acknowledge the pope, baptizing adults instead of babies, baptizing babies instead of adults, etc. But McCain is a true Christian and a Jesus lover. He will not use Patriotic act to harass American Christians. That is the promise I have taken from him.

When Obama says that Christianity means love, physical force. He says a true Christian will never kill or subjugate anyone– because it is not what Jesus did. Obama preaches pre-Sept 11 Christianity. As partners in governance, McCain will enhance faith based funding. Churches should not worry themselves as this money is taken from people via taxation. Churches should support a war in Iraq that has killed tens of thousands and put civilians – including Iraq’s brave but tiny Christian community – in great tribulation. It is a good thing that no American church prays for Iraqis as they endure the persecution, poverty, and pain this war has inflicted. Instead seek blessing for our troops.

Lastly I appeal to all American to donate money to God Bless America Church, ours is not a social club. We actively take part in politics and cultural activity. health and education. We are engaged in Christianizing whole world including America and criminalizing, ostracizing and demonizing everything what we perceive to be anti Christ like Izlam and Muzlimz, homosexuals, secularists, atheists, communists and Godless democracy. This is a battle between the forces of righteousness and the hordes of hell. Millions of souls weigh in the balance and our church stands at the critical crossroads of history. God bless you all.

For the first time in history, the world will vote as a whole to tackle the biggest problem our Earth faces-global warming. WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and other NGOs across the globe have joined hands to target 1 billion votes for Earth Hour 2009, which will be presented to the world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. The meeting will devise concrete steps to tackle global warming in the most effective manner. Earth Hour which kicked off to a resounding success in 2007 at Sydney had 2.2 million homes and businesses switch of their lights for an hour. It reduced the city’s energy consumption by 10.2 percent for one hour. This is equal to having 48,616 vehicles off the road for a year! The move met with a resonating success again in 2008 as well where 50 million people in various parts of the world, switched off their lights for one hour. Earth Hour will next take place on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm, local time. More than 80 countries and territories including India, have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009. One of the most well-known personalities in India, actor-director Aamir Khan will be spear-heading the campaign in India. It is expected that a billion people across the world will switch off their lights for one hour from as an endeavor to counter climatic change. Climatic change and global warming is a real problem which requires proactive solutions. It is not a problem of just one country in isolation of other nations; it is a real issue that should elicit a reality check in all of us. It is high time we thought of taking a stand as a planet, rather than looking it from the perspective of a nation. We should all come together and take a call on how we can save the future of the planet. If we do not, the upcoming generation will live in dark, literally speaking and have to make compromises with whatever little resources there is left in the planet.

Every election is always different from another. But there is a thing that is the same for every election – it is the reason American people vote. Americans vote because they want their country to have a decent leader, a man that will do everything possible to promote theirs country position in the world’s politics in the first place. They cannot stay out of that, because every vote counts and they know it. There is also another reason American people vote, it especially concerns those, who are not good at observing what is going on in the Senate now. Such people usually vote by tradition without really getting into the essence of the deal. It is more than just knowing the political party candidate when it comes to participating in the elections. Even in America, where the two party system exists it is still a problem to make people know whom they are voting for. This system has been used in the United States for a long time. Its roots lead to the very moment of the first ratification of the Constitution. At that moment two political parties were defined – the Federalist Party and the Anti-Federalist Party. Soon it became a tradition and it happened because this system was pretty good in use. It was easier for people to have only two options. So since 1895 the Republican and the Democratic parties became the major dominants in American politics. This system gives the opportunity to choose from only two candidates for President of the United States. This actually shows that this system in not probably the best when it comes to elections, but it is traditionally fixed. What it really does – it simplifies the process of voting. You either vote for the Republicans who are conservative, or for Democrats who are liberal. It has been historically proved that the appearance of the third party causes political splits like it happened when Theodore Roosevelt decided to form the Progressive party in 1912 but most of the time due to the in difference of the voters to them the other parties get no support. Talking about elections it is very important to point out the Electoral College. The reason of its foundation was the difference in electing the president by popular vote and by Congress. Such things caused and still cause a lot of troubles during the elections. The Electoral College was called as a compromise between these two. Its structure is obviously well built. It consists of 538 electors. Each one goes for each of the 435 members of the House of Representatives and 100 Senators plus three for the District of Columbia. The number of electors is equal to of House members to which it is entitled. The electors are originally chosen by the political parties. During the elections each state gives the Governor prepares seven original Certificates of Ascertainment. A Certificate of Ascertainment is a list of these electors for the candidate that got the majority of the votes. Then the copies are sent to House of Congress. It is necessary to have 270 electoral votes to elect the President or Vice President. And the electors are not obligated to vote the same way as the majority of their state did. So the Electoral College runs in order to make the elections more objective.

Does America Still Need the Voting Rights Act?

On August 6, 1965 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed one of the most important pieces of legislation in America’s history. For the first time, more than 2.5 million African Americans were able to cast their ballots in elections without fear, intimidation or physical harm. The Voting Rights Act abolished literacy tests, poll taxes, grandfather clauses and all other unnecessary requirements that had prevented African Americans from having their voices heard in American politics.

However in 1965, very few Americans could foresee the day when a person, who would have been unable to vote prior to the Voting Rights Act, would receive enough votes to be elected to the world’s highest office in a country where African Americans are still very much in the minority. As a result of Barack Obama’s election as the 44th President of the United States, many have questioned the need for certain provisions of the Voting Rights Act. The Northwest Austin (Texas) Municipal Utility District Number One, a government board dedicated to providing local services to approximately 3,500 people, has recently appealed to the United States Supreme Court to overturn Section 5 of the act, calling it “the most federally invasive law in existence.”

”The elephant in the room is what to make of the Obama election,” said Columbia law professor Nathaniel Persily. “Does the election of the first African American president undermine the central justification for parts of the Voting Rights Act?”

In April, the U.S. Supreme Court will review a lower court ruling that upheld Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which requires all or parts of 16 states with a history of racism, to receive approval before implementing any changes in election procedures. States affected entirely include Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas. States partially affected include California, Florida, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Virginia and South Dakota.

However, the local Texas government at the heart of this litigation argues that they have no history of racial discrimination and many believe that America no longer needs such legislation in a “post-racial society.”

But what does Obama’s election actually imply? Has America completely overcome its racist past or is racism still an obstacle to true equality for people of color?

According to defendersonline.org, a whopping 131 million Americans cast their vote for the next commander-in-chief in November 2008, an eight percent increase from the previous election in 2004. Obama received a total of 53 percent of the vote, which was a significant percentage considering the much closer elections in 2000 and 2004.

African Americans constituted 13 percent of voters, up from 11 percent in 2004, while Hispanics made up nine percent of voters, a one percent increase from the previous presidential election. Furthermore, 95 percent of Americans cast their ballot for President-elect Obama and 67 percent of Hispanics voted for the former senator from Illinois. Most impressively, Obama was able to win 43 percent of the White vote, even though Democrat John Kerry was only able to win over 41 percent of the White vote four years earlier.

Nevertheless, White voters were the only demographic that Obama was not able to win majority support. Furthermore, Obama could only muster support from 10 percent of White voters in Alabama. In addition, many Southern White Democrats stated that they would support Republican John McCain because they could not bring themselves to vote for an African American for president.

Consequently, Obama was forced to obtain secret service protection earlier than any other presidential candidate in history because of assassination threats. According to telegraph.co.uk, the secret service has investigated over 500 death threats against the future president.

Prior to accepting the Democratic nomination for president, Tharin Gartrel and Nathan Johnson were arrested in Denver for making assassination threats towards Obama during the Democratic National Convention. According to CBS station KCNC-TV, one suspect said they were “going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a rifle … sighted at 750 yards.”

However, in spite of the conflicting evidence of racial advancement, America’s recent election of President-elect Obama has proven that this country has what it takes to unify despite racial differences. The struggles that those from the Civil Rights era endured led to such monumental achievements as the Voting Rights Act and the historic presidential election of 2008. But it remains to be seen if this is proof of a permanent post-racial society or if race will continue play a factor and legislation such as the Voting Rights Act is necessary to ensure equality.
